From the HuffingtonPost.com, with video of his speech on Thursday at the Aspen Institute, Tom Friedman’s preview of his new book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution — and How It Can Renew America.
Personally, while I used to admire Friedman, I find his support, and ongoing rationalization for his support, of the Iraq War to be worthy of a trip to a re-education camp. But I am hoping that his wide following will support the case for this:
“Without a carbon tax, without a floor on gasoline or oil, you are never gonna have a market," he continued. "Without a market you will not have scale, without scale all you have is a green hobby."
Of course, it would be interesting if Friedman would present a tally of what the Iraq war has cost and what that same investment might have produced in the way of a "green" market. Because as resources (in the shape of cheap energy) begin to dwindle and as the climate becomes, in Friedman's view, ever more wierd, we as a nation will increasingly be presented with the choice of whether to fight for more resource control (Iraq) or to cooperate with other countries to use resources more effectively. So it might be helpful, Tom, to review how costly the wrong choices can be.
