U.S. Shale Boom Has Led To Big Payoffs, But Energy Independence Isn’t One. Nor Should It Be

March 20, 2018 by Energy Policy Institute at UChicago

U.S. Shale Boom Has Led To Big Payoffs, But Energy Independence Isn’t One. Nor Should It Be

Fueled by the shale oil boom, U.S. oil production in November, 2017, was 10.057 million barrels per day (bpd), making it the first time U.S. production exceeded 10 million bpd since 1970 (and breaking 1970’s record). This rate of crude oil production also surpasses that of Saudi Arabia, leaving the U.S. behind only Russia in terms of total crude production. … [Read more...]

U.S. Energy Dominance: Markets Trump Policy In 2017

Over the last year President Trump has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to making America a dominant player in the world energy markets. This rhetoric has underpinned a set of policies designed to deregulate and encourage oil and gas activity. … [Read more...]

The Militarization of U.S. Energy Policy: Donald Trump Enlists Fossil Fuels in the Struggle for Global Dominance

As the recently published National Security Strategy shows, Donald Trump has turned the expansion of the U.S. fossil fuel industry and its exports into a major component of American foreign and security policy, writes energy expert and author Michael T. Klare. … [Read more...]

Delivery Of Russian LNG Heats Up Discussion About U.S. Energy Dominance And Sanctions

On Jan. 28, a French tanker, Gaselys, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) docked in Boston, where a cold snap that curtailed regional gas supplies had created demand for imports. The delivery came as a shock to many international and national observers as it seemingly contradicted the recent narrative of U.S. self-sufficiency in natural gas. … [Read more...]

Whats Next For U.S. Shale Giants?

For OPEC, U.S. shale oil is a curse. For the Trump administration, it is the biggest tool to help achieve what the White House has dubbed energy dominance. There are hundreds of players of all sizes in the shale patch, but the bulk of production is courtesy of just 30 companies—the shale oligopoly. … [Read more...]

Why Saudi Arabia Should Fear U.S. Oil Dominance

Why Saudi Arabia Should Fear U.S. Oil Dominance

One of the more important recent developments in global energy is the resurgence of U.S. energy production, thanks in large part to the shale revolution. Now, after half a century as a net importer, the U.S. is poised in the coming decade to become a net exporter, as imports from historic sources decline and demand for U.S. energy products abroad grows. … [Read more...]

Who Loses From Trump’s Pursuit Of ‘Energy Dominance’? You, The Taxpayer

Who Loses From Trump’s Pursuit Of ‘Energy Dominance’? You, The Taxpayer

Since the oil crises of the 1970s, every U.S. president has in some form or another proclaimed “energy independence” as a goal of American energy policy. The policy aimed to reduce dependency on foreign oil following the gasoline rationing, long lines at the pump and spiking prices that resulted from the 1973-74 oil embargo and the 1979 Iranian revolution. … [Read more...]

Russia Eyes Rapid Middle East Energy Expansion

Russia Eyes Rapid Middle East Energy Expansion

Having battled through the travails of an ever-tightening sanctions regime and a prolonged economic downturn, which in most cases led to a freezing up or lowering of expenditures and the adoption of a very risk-averse investment strategy, Russian companies are now destined to embark upon a new expansion, this time in the Middle East. … [Read more...]

Energy Dominance: A Nice Sounding Slogan and Empty Policy Goal

Energy Dominance: A Nice Sounding Slogan and Empty Policy Goal

A reporter recently called me and asked me what I thought of the term “energy dominance”, which had been recently introduced by President Trump and his cabinet. I had never heard it before. Rick Perry, Secretary of Energy, explained it as follows: “An energy dominant America means self-reliant. It means a secure nation, free from the geopolitical turmoil of other nations who seek to use energy as an economic weapon.” … [Read more...]
